Ramón y Cajal fellow at the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN-CSIC, Spain)
I am an environmental microbiologist with a great interest on using bioinformatic approaches to study microbial communities. My research has focused on archaeal metabolism, environmental metagenomics and cultivation of novel microorganisms. Currently, I use next-generation sequencing technologies to link microbial function in different environments: from urban wastewaters to the polar regions.

New manuscript on the microbiomes of Las Tablas de Daimiel
- May 5th, 2026
----------------------------------------------------------
Alejandro has authored a manuscript, where the group describes the microbiomes of Las Tablas de Daimiel, a Spanish wetland 💧 that has the consideration of national Park. It was published in Metabarcoding and Metagenomics.
In collaboration with other members of the Museum like Mireia Mestre or Salvador Sánchez 🔬🤝🦠, we describe the microbial communities of the water column and the sediment providing a first baseline for future studies.
Las Tablas de Daimiel is an important ecosystem for migratory birds and has been affected by water use for agriculture and climate change. Therefore, this study is key to understand the ecology of the whole environment.🙌

Radio interviews "A golpe de bit" - May, 2026
----------------------------------------------------------
Rafa has participated in two radio programs talking about the last publication on a methanotrophic biofilm discovered in the Ginsburg mud volcano🌋 (Gulf of Cadiz). On May 5th, he participated in "A golpe de bit" 🎙️ of the Spanish national radio broadcaster, while on May 16th he took part on a interview for Nautilus, a program from the IB3 broadcaster.
It was a wonderful opportunity to explain microbiology concepts like biofilm or microbial communities to a broader audience!

Pint of Science
- May 18th, 2026
----------------------------------------------------------
Alejandro and Rafael have participated in a new edition of the Pint of Science, the initiative that brings scientists across the globe to the bars in order to explain their research to wider audiences. 💻🔬
Alejandro made a marvellous presentation in the Bomber Cocktail Bar (Leganés) on how we know that Taylor Swift is a marine bacteria 💧🦠
Rafa gave a presentation on being an archaea in a bacterionormative world in La Botillería (Madrid). 🔬🤝🦠
It was great to see so many people interested in the microbial world!

Víctor presents at the EOHA Congress - May 19th, 2026
----------------------------------------------------------
Víctor has participated in the 2026 EOHA, the annual meeting of the European One Health Association (EOHA), which was celebrated in Madrid from the 18th to the 20th of May. 🔬🤝🦠
He presented the ARGOS project showing the preliminary results on the resistome of the Canal de Isabel II sewage system. It was a great time to network with other colleagues interested in antimicrobial resistance and One Health perspective
